In that spirit, today we’re going to look back on the content management system industry over the past 12 months from January 2021 to January 2022.
Of all the content management system platforms, there are only currently nine that take home more than a 1% market share.
These platforms are:

Throughout the year, OpenCart did manage to break into the “1% and higher” club – reaching a peak of 1.1% back in May. However, it has since slipped to 0.9% in November and remains there in January 2022.
So how did the other top 9 content management systems perform throughout 2021 in terms of market share?

WordPress has increased in CMS market share since last January by 1%, despite a slight dip lately. Its dominance of the CMS market remains overwhelming.

Shopify managed to grow its market share by 1.3% throughout the year and remains in second place – although quite some distance away from WordPress.

The battle between Wix, Squarespace, Joomla, and Drupal was exciting throughout 2021, with each one being above the others at certain points in the year. Squarespace started 2021 in fourth place and climbed to third before dropping to fourth again, to end the year where they started – and grew by 0.4%.

Joomla will be the most disappointed content management system in the top 9 this year. It began 2021 in third place on 3.6% – with more than a 1% difference between it and Wix in fourth spot. Yet Joomla lost out to Wix and Squarespace to end the year in fifth place – losing 1.1% of its market share.
